Born on 20 July 1980 (along with non-identical twin sister Patricia), this Brazilian model's rise to fame was swift and certain. In the late Nineties, Gisele took the fashion world by storm, often appearing on multiple magazine covers simultaneously. In January 2000, she fronted both British Vogue and American Vogue at the same time.
The arrival of this 5'11", slender, yet curvaceous phenomenon on the international fashion scene in 1996 was viewed by many within the industry as the beginning of a new move away from the harsh, edgy images that had dominated the decade into a softer, sexier phase. Although Gisele herself had originally harboured ambitions of being a professional volleyball player or a vet, she was discovered by Brazilian model scouts at the age of 14, while eating a hamburger during a school trip to Rio de Janeiro. Two years later, she found herself modelling in New York, after Elite agency's Vice President Massimo Redaelli spotted her in a local fashion show and signed herup on the spot.
She first appeared on the cover of British Vogue for the August 1998 issue. Her status as the most wanted face in fashion was confirmed in December 1999, when she was named Vogue/VH1 Model of the Year in New York. A year later, she returned to co-host the event with Cuba Gooding Jr.
Though the supermodel no longer does runway full time you can still see her doing special runway appearances for various fashion houses. And in 2007 Gisele graced the runway for the likes of Dolce & Gabbana and Dior Haute Couture as well has continuing her contract with Colcci in Brazil.
Since her debut, Bündchen has been the face of a variety of advertising campaigns including several seasons of Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Missoni, Versace, Céline, Givenchy, Bvlgari, Lanvin, Guerlain, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Earl Jean, Zara, Chloé, Michael Kors, Louis Vuitton, and Victoria's Secret. She has appeared in advertisements for Nivea lotion and is the face of several Brazilian brands including Vivo (Brazil's leading mobile company), Multiplan, Colcci and Credicard. After C&A Brazil hired Bündchen as a spokesmodel and began airing television commercials, sales increased by 30%.
In May of 2006, Bündchen signed another multi-million dollar deal, this time with American giant Apple Computer. She starred in an advertising campaign to promote the new Macintosh line through the Get a Mac advertisements.
She also has her own line of sandals with footwear company Grendene called Ipanema Gisele Bündchen. Forbes puts her 53rd on their list of the most powerful celebrities of 2007 due to the success of her shoe line. Custom Ipanema flip-flops sell for as much as $230 a pair. She is also the owner of a hotel in the south of Brazil, the Palladium Executive.
In May of 2007 it was confirmed that Gisele multi-million dollar contract came to an end and two parted ways. It was widely reported that Gisele split with the lingerie giant because of money disputes, but it was revealed that Gisele just wanted to move on to different things. Though Gisele has left her biggest contract she kept herself busy by signing on to be the face of over 20 brands worldwide from countries including the United States, Russia, Brazil, Italy, France, Mexico, Spain, Turkey, South Korea, Germany and Switzerland.
When Gisele is not busy with endorsements and other things related to fashion, she has taken the time to appear in 2 movies so far; Taxi and The Devil Wears Prada. Though none of them were main roles she definitely made her presence known. Later it was rumored that Gisele would be in the next installment of The Di Vinci Code, but it was later proven to be false.
Gisele still retains strong roots in her village of Horizontina and is frequently to be found there, visiting her parents, five sisters (Raquel, Grasiela, twin Patricia, Gabriela, and youngest Rafaela) and the many pets she still keeps at her family home. At home in Manhattan and on her travels, she is almost never without her Yorkshire Terrier, Vida.
